Honeymoon Turns Tragic in Meghalaya Murder
The mysterious murder of 29-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya has taken a dark turn, with police alleging that his wife, Sonam, 24, plotted the killing with her lover.
The couple, who married on May 11, had left Indore for their honeymoon on May 20. Originally planning to visit the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, they instead traveled to Meghalaya. On May 23, both went missing near a popular tourist spot in Shillong. Days later, on June 2, Raja's body was found in a gorge, hacked to death with a machete.
Sonam remained untraceable until June 8, when she was found at a roadside eatery in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. While UP Police said she was ill and distraught, Meghalaya Police claimed she surrendered “under pressure.” She was immediately taken into custody.
Investigators allege Sonam had an extramarital affair with her employee, Raj Kushwaha. According to Raja’s brother Vipul Raghuvanshi, Raj and Sonam spoke frequently on the phone. Though he didn’t directly accuse Sonam, he admitted her involvement seemed possible if Raj was connected.
Meghalaya IGP Dalton P Marak confirmed Sonam and Raj have been arrested, along with three others linked to the murder. Police suspect the crime was premeditated, pointing to the couple’s lack of return tickets and the sudden change in travel plans.
Raja's family is demanding a CBI probe, questioning inconsistencies in the investigation. “We haven’t received the post-mortem report. We want the truth,” said Vipul. His brother Sachin added, “If Sonam survived, who exactly killed Raja?”
Sonam’s family insists she is innocent. Her father, Devi Singh, denied the accusations and claimed police are fabricating the story. “My daughter could never do this,” he said.
Raja’s mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, said Sonam was well-behaved but added, “If she is guilty, she should be hanged.”
As the investigation continues, both families demand justice while battling growing grief and disbelief.
