Arrest Warrant Issued Against Former Bangladesh Skipper Shakib Al Hasan

Dhaka, Jan 20 — A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against former Bangladesh cricket captain and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in connection with a cheque bounce case involving approximately $300,000 owed to IFIC Bank. The arrest warrant was issued on Sunday by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman.

The case dates back to December 15, 2023, when Shakib, who has been abroad since August 2024, was accused of issuing bounced cheques. The court had initially directed Shakib to appear for a hearing on January 19, 2025, but his failure to comply led to the court taking legal action.

The case also implicates Shakib’s company, Al Hasan Agro Farm Limited, along with its Managing Director Gazi Shahgir Hossain and directors Emdadul Haq and Malaika Begum. The company had secured loans from IFIC Bank’s Banani branch and issued cheques to repay portions of the loan, but these cheques were dishonored due to insufficient funds in the account.

The case comes at a difficult time for Shakib, who has been facing challenges both on and off the field. In addition to his legal troubles, the International Cricket Council (ICC) recently imposed a ban on his bowling, further adding to his struggles. Moreover, despite his illustrious cricket career, Shakib was notably excluded from Bangladesh’s 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, a decision that surprised many fans and analysts.

Shakib’s legal issues and recent career setbacks have cast a shadow over what has been a remarkable journey in international cricket.
