Mohammed Shami Likely to Play in Fifth T20I, Confirms Bowling Coach Morne Morkel

Mumbai : Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel has hinted that Mohammed Shami is set to feature in the fifth and final T20I against England on Sunday at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Speaking about Shami’s form and fitness, Morkel expressed confidence in the veteran pacer’s ability and confirmed that he would be given a chance in the last match of the series.

Shami, who had been sidelined due to injury since the 2023 ODI World Cup, made his return to the national squad for this T20I series. However, he was benched for the first two matches, raising concerns about his fitness. He finally got an opportunity in the third T20I in Rajkot, replacing Arshdeep Singh, but went wicketless in his three-over spell, conceding 25 runs.

Shami was once again left out in the fourth T20I in Pune, as Arshdeep returned to the playing XI. Addressing the team’s plans, Morne Morkel praised Shami’s efforts in the nets, confirming that he would get a chance in the upcoming game.

"Shami has been bowling really well. His pace and accuracy in warm-up sessions have been impressive. His experience will be invaluable for young bowlers. We are looking forward to seeing him in action in the final T20I," Morkel stated.

With India having already sealed the series 3-1, the final match will be an opportunity for Shami to showcase his fitness and form, ahead of major upcoming tournaments.
